Vietnamese Banana Beignets – Fried Dessert

December 12th 2011By fbogus

A little different from the traditional Hanukkah dessert, these bananas are definitely a treat for the adults. Don't be afraid of flaming the rum. Be smart and careful and the results will be delicious.

Sugar Sugar Doughnuts

The mere thought of these doughnuts is enough to spark giddy, mouth-watering excitement. Sugar flying in the air, the smell of dough frying in oil, even the flipping manoeuvre - it’s all great fun! Doughnuts are one of those foods that have the power to lure - who can refuse an invitation to have a warm doughnut or five, especially around Chanukah? This yeast-based version is light and airy and the effort you will invest in working the dough is all worth it. We dare you to have just one!

It is hard to make jelly doughnuts into health food, but this recipe provides whole grains and a little fruit.

Sufganiot (Jelly Doughnuts)

Classic Sufganiot

March 7th 2011By Jamie Geller

Uber-easy jelly-filled sufganiot (doughnuts) are ideal for Chanukah or anytime you get a craving. My sister-in-law Carly and I attempted this recipe one Chanukah night when the whole family came over for candle-lighting. Everyone got involved. Some of us were on deep-fry duty, some of us powdered and the rest "quality control" tasted. We all had a blast. There was flour and confectioners' sugar everywhere.

Pumpkin Doughnuts with Cinnamon Maple Glaze

These doughnuts are simple and delicious. Combine the fall flavors of pumpkin with this classic hanukkah treat. The dough is a bit sticky, but do not add more flour as the doughnuts will be too dry.

Romanians do not waste anything so they deep fry the round dough that was cut out of the doughnut's center and place it on top of the Papansh that is served with sour cherries jam and sour cream or whipped cream.

Non-Dairy Cronot

December 2nd 2013By Melissa Kaye Apter

I made these cronots non dairy with margarine and shortening and they came out amazing. You can eat them plain or filled with your favorite cream or jelly or simply sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar as I have done here.

Mousse Filled Sufganiot

December 7th 2014By Shira Buzelan

Here is a unique take on a favourite Israeli coffee house confection. An easy to prepare homemade sufgania filled with a no bake mousse like cheesecake filling, topped with a simple glaze and covered with a home-made crumble topping. Perfectly balanced and not over the top sweet, a perfect dairy dessert in the spirit of Chanukah in Israel.

Malasadas are Portuguese fried doughnuts and are a favorite for both the locals and tourists to Hawaii.

Lemony Choux Doughnuts

choux donut holes

December 16th 2014By Ronnie Fein

I like to make these small donuts for Chanukah. These are made with choux pastry, the kind you use to make cream puffs, gougeres and profiteroles, only instead of baking the dough as I do for those pastries, I fry it in small blobs. Choux doughnuts go down easy, take minutes to make and don’t require waiting for yeast dough to rise or rolling out dough or anything involved like that. We like plain doughnut holes. I add a hint of refreshing lemon peel to the dough and a coating of cinnamon-sugar or confectioners sugar on the crust. But you can add raisins, cranberries, chopped nuts and such to the dough if you wish.
