Uber-easy jelly-filled sufganiot (doughnuts) are ideal for Chanukah or anytime you get a craving. My sister-in-law Carly and I attempted this recipe one Chanukah night when the whole family came over for candle-lighting. Everyone got involved. Some of us were on deep-fry duty, some of us powdered and the rest "quality control" tasted. We all had a blast. There was flour and confectioners' sugar everywhere.

These are great for breakfast or as a snack. I sometimes like to substitute Nutella or chocolate spread for the jelly.

I love food that fakes you out, when my husband came home and I asked him to taste one of these donuts with dinner, he said, isn't that dessert? Once he got over the confusion, he tasted it and loved it, although he suggested it would be better for a brunch and I agree, it has a bagel with cream cheese flavor, but a different texture and much more fun for a party.

This same recipe makes great apple fritters. Peel, core, and slice three apples into 1⁄4-inch rings. Lightly coat in flour, shaking off excess. Prepare batter as directed. Dip the apple rings into the batter, shake off excess, and fry. Sprinkle with confectioner’s sugar and cinnamon.

These doughnuts are the perfect treat to use for your Chanukah parties. But be sure to have adult supervision when you are frying them, since the oil will get very hot.

Try these delicious baked donuts for an almost guiltfree Chanukah alternative. Each donut contains only 1 teaspoon of oil. For pareve donuts, use coconut or soy yogurt and milk. When measuring the flour, use a spoon. Do not pack the flour down into the measuring cup.
