Potato Kugel

There is nothing like a classic potato kugel, easy, delicious and comforting any time. Perfect for a side dish on Shabbat or a holiday. Freezes well, reheats well and is a favorite.

  • Prep Time : 20 min
  • Cook Time : 1 hour
  • Ready Time : 1 hour, 20 min

  • 6 potatoes
  • 1 onion
  • 3 Eggs
  • 1/3 cup matzoh meal or flour
  • 11/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. pepper
  • 4 tbsp. oil
  • 1/4 tsp. baking powder

1 Peel potatoes and place them in a bowl with cold water.
2 In a food processor, grate the potatoes and the onion.
3 Squeeze out all the liquid from the potatoes using a dishtowel, then combine the potatoes with the rest of the ingredients. Allow the water from the potatoes to sit and pour off the top, put the potato starch left on the bottom into the kugel mixture.
4 Preheat the oven to 400. Spray a 9×9 inch baking pan and heat in oven. Once hot pour in potato mixture, place in oven and cook for about 1 hour.

  4. Thanks for this, always wanted to try it, as a lover and fan of ‘potato’ recipes, in general!

  5. Can you adapt this recipe for a dutch oven (stove top)?

    • You can’t really make this on the stove, if you want to do something on the stove, you are better off with Potato Latkes.
