Layer Slow Cooker Kraut

Layer Slow Cooker Kraut
This does something totally different to sauerkraut. Even those who despise kraut, like this dish. I have made it layered with chicken sausage links too, which is so good. Just layer the chicken in the middle of the dish before cooking.
Times
- Prep Time : 10 minutes min
- Cook Time : 4-5 hrs min
- Ready Time : 14 min
Servings
Ingredients
- 2 bags (2 lbs each) sauerkraut with or without caraway
- 2 cans (16 oz. each) stewed tomatoes cut into bit-size pieces
- 1 cup brown sugar lightly packed
Directions
Drain, but do not rinse the kraut. Reserve 1/2 cup kraut juice for the bottom of the crockpot. Pour in the reserved kraut juice. Layer half the kraut in the crockpot. Drain the tomatoes, roughly cut, and place half on top of the kraut layer. Sprinkle with half of the brown sugar. Repeat layers in the same order, ending with brown sugar on top. Cover and cook on high 4-5 hours. If using Chicken sausage as I suggested, lay them on top of the lowest layer of brown sugar. AND, if using chicken sausage, INCREASE cooking time to 5-6 hours total. This is good served with any kind of potatoes.

I like this recipe and I don’t think I would use the caraway. You can also put rolled cabbage stuffed with ground beef and rice to this instead of chicken
