Apple Crisp

The lemon zest and lemon juice adds brightness to the crisp and sets it apart from the standard apple crisps. This is seriously the best apple crisp ever. Serve it warm with vanilla ice cream. Lemon zest refers to the outer peel of the lemon, not including the white part which is very bitter.

  • Prep Time : 10 min
  • Cook Time : 45 min
  • Ready Time : 55 min

  • 6 Apples (a mix of granny smith and Cortland apples work the best)
  • 1-2 teaspoons lemon zest
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/8 cup flour
  • 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

For Crisp

  • 1/2 cup or 1 stick margarine
  • 1/4 cup of brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup of flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon (optional
  • Individual ramekins (optional)

Peel apples and chop.
Mix lemon zest, lemon juice, brown sugar, flour, nutmeg, cinnamon, and vanilla with apples.
Place in oven-to-table baking dish or a 9×13 baking pan or individual ramekins.

Mix margarine with brown sugar, white sugar, flour and cinnamon for the crisp.  Top the apples with the crisp and bake at 350 degrees. 25 minutes for individual ramekins and 40-45 minutes in a 9×13 baking dish.

I am sure this is delicious, but unfortunately the recipe is unclear. What exactly is being included in the crumble? Is the cinnamon included in the apple mixture, because it does not say so. please make the recipe clearer. thank you very much. And how do you suggest it be kept warm on friday night?

  2. I find this recipe unclear. The ingredients aren’t listed in order. Do the nutmeg and cinnamon get mixed with the apples or are they part of the topping/crumble?

Has anyone made this recipe ahead of time, freezing until ready to serve? Was the recipe successful after freezing?

  7. This recipe looks divine – I love desserts that use fresh ingredients like apple. Can’t wait to try these in the individual ramekins, a really great idea to spruce it up!

  8. Is the flour just regular All-purpose flour or matzo meal?I didnt know you could use just regular flour. Thanks!
