HOW IS THIS SIMILAR/DIFFERENT FROM A COOKBOOK?
Our 28 Day Challenge is a more than a cookbook. It was prepared as a 28 day meal plan with shopping lists and full nutritional information for you to follow over 28 days, along with a community of professionals and participants for support.
The 28 Day Challenge is designed to help you get a healthy dinner on the table every night that the whole family will love. Just like the recipes in your favorite cookbooks, you can come back to these recipes again and again.
IS THE PLAN SUITABLE FOR VEGETARIANS? IF NOT, CAN IT BE EASILY MODIFIED?
The 28 Day Challenge is approximately 50% vegetarian, with vegetarian options for the remainder of the recipes. There is very little red meat included in the plan, but there is a fair amount of chicken.
CAN THE PLAN BE EASILY MODIFIED FOR GLUTEN, NUT, DAIRY, AND EGG ALLERGIES?
We want the recipes to be enjoyed by as many people as possible. We’ve included notes on how to make every recipe gluten-free. We are happy to share personalized tips via email on how to modify for nut, dairy and egg allergies when relevant, but it will take some extra work on your part to tweak the recipes to meet your specific needs. Our team is also available to answer your questions on the topic, so please send us an email.
IS THIS MEAL PLAN FAMILY-FRIENDLY?
The 28 Day Challenge meal plan was designed with families in mind, and is meant to act as a helping hand to get families cooking + eating more nutrient-rich, unprocessed foods. Every recipe has been both adult and kid-tested, and has been given a thumbs up by tasters of all ages! Of course, we know each recipe won’t please everyone, so never hesitate to modify a recipe in order to meet your own family’s needs :).
DOES THE PLAN REFLECT ANY SPECIFIC DIET, SUCH AS PALEO, LOW CARB, LOW FAT, ETC.?
No, we don't subscribe to any specific diet, we believe everything can be enJOYed in moderation as part of an overall healthy eating plan.
WILL I LOSE WEIGHT ON THE MEAL PLAN?
We believe you can if you want to. We give you the tools to lose weight, including full delicious recipes for all your meals and calorie information for our suggested portions, but the actual portions and additional snacks that you choose to eat are up to you.
Tamar Genger, MA RD, co-author and Registered Dietitian will be available throughout the challenge on Facebook or email to answer any questions as well.
DO I HAVE TO FOLLOW THE RECIPE EXACTLY, OR CAN I SWITCH OUT AN INGREDIENT OR TWO?
You can always feel free to make the recipe your own, especially when it comes to spices. However, in order to stick to the provided nutritional information, you will want to avoid any major changes. If the dish is not in your taste at all, you may also swap a recipe for another recipe entirely, which you have tried previously and want to make again.
WHAT IF I DON’T WANT TO LOSE WEIGHT?
You can enJOY the recipes and the planned menus featuring good healthy foods without worrying about portion sizes and extra snacks.
WHAT IF I HAVE A QUESTION FOR A DIETITIAN?
Tamar Genger, MA RD is the co-author of the ebook and Executive Editor of JOYofKOSHER.com. Tamar will be available via email to answer questions and will be on Facebook every Monday at 1:30pm EST to have lunch with you and answer all your questions in real time on our special 28DayChallenge Group.
IS THE MEAL PLAN DESIGNED FOR MEN AND WOMEN?
It is really geared more towards the average woman in terms of calories, but men can certainly cook and enJOY the recipes too. Each person will have to determine their specific calorie needs and adjust portion sizes and/or snacks accordingly. We can also help with this, please send us an email.
IS THE BOOK ONLY AVAILABLE DIGITALLY?
Yes, it will be delivered to you via a link to download the pdf, you can feel free to print it out for your own use.
WHAT IS BAHARAT AND WHERE CAN I GET IT?
Baharat is a Middle Eastern spice blend that can be made in many different ways and found in many grocery stores. You can easily substitute Ras el Hanout if that is easier to find, or make your own.
Here is a recipe to make your own Baharat, but feel free to adjust it to your liking.
- 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
- 2 tablespoons ground paprika
- 2 tablespoons ground black pepper
- 2 tablespoons ground coriander
- 2 tablespoons ground cumin
- 1 tablespoon ground allspice
- 1 teaspoon ground cardamom
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
Combine all ingredients and store in an airtight container. Makes 3/4 cup.
WHAT ELSE CAN I DO WITH MISO PASTE?
WHAT ABOUT GARAM MASALA?
IS THIS A CONTEST?
This is not a contest, it is a challenge. It is something we are all doing together and supporting each other to complete rather than competing against one another.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE 28 DAYS?
We're so glad you asked. We plan to continue the challenge every month throughout the summer and hope you will join as much as you are able. We realize some of the recipes are new and different and they only get easier the second and third time around. You don't want all that Baharat to go to waste do you?
HAVE ANOTHER QUESTION?
Email us anytime! If you’re having trouble receiving or downloading the PDF, please contact us right away and include your first and last name, plus the email you used to purchase (we will respond within 24 hours, excluding weekends).
We all make mistakes and we hope you will help us find them all before June. Here is a list of corrections.

Love the idea that I don't have to go through all the meals and figure out how much to buy thank you. Makes my life a lot easier right now. Also having the nutritional value is great. - TZIVIA
I am so excited to be joining you on this challenge. You are actually encouraging me to broaden my horizons and eat foods I have never eaten before! - ILANA
I'm personalizing some of the menus to adhere to my post bariatric surgery nutritional needs (much of it is already bariatric-friendly), so I couldn't have this morning's smoothie - but my husband LOVED it. He said it was very filling and he's 6'4"! Even my 24-year-old son is enjoying the challenge. He's looking forward to "Doritos popcorn" later this week. - NANCY
I have made a lot of things but I have to say that tonight's dinner is in my top 5 most delicious EVER!!!!!! Tamar Genger and Jaimie Geller you have outdone yourself with these recipes. The Spiced Rubbed Chicken , the Fennel and the Fruit Salsa were all unbelievable. -MELANIE
Thanks again for a wonderful program! I like to eat well and follow a healthy lifestyle, however, with kids and a busy life, I find myself more often just grabbing stuff on the go. I'm also not fond of the kitchen and usually eating right means a lot of kitchen time! However, with the plan you formulated with Jamie, everything is so well-written out!!!! It's perfect for the OCD person, like me! LOL. Rather than getting overwhelmed when I have a recipe but lack the ingredients, you ensured my pantry is stocked up prior to the challenge beginning. The week at a glance sheet, as well as the prep section is amazing! Now when it comes to preparing the food, I have it all ready. And the food!!!! It has been superb so far!!! I've been sending pics to my husband while at work so he gets excited for when he comes home...and to my friend who wants me to be her personal chef since it all looks so good!!!! - SARIT
I'm excited to have so many meals planned! No more wondering what to make for supper. - CHERYL
This 28-day challenge has been such a breath of fresh air for me and my kitchen even though I'm a bit behind schedule, to know that I have all the ingredients waiting at home for me with a yummy tried and tested meal ready to be cooked gives me the fuzzies! Thank you Joy of Kosher for reviving my Joy of Cooking - HANNIE
I must say- because of you my family is eating healthier than ever! My kids love the meals and keep asking for more! I can't wait till your next e-recipe book comes out!!! - ILANA
this has been such terrific fun and a great way to get out of our old boring menu routine. I love to cook and I love cookbooks. Yours remind me a lot of Julie Child or Ina Garten in that they're uncomplicated and they work. - NANCY
