8 Ways to Enjoy Goldenberg’s Peanut Chews

I’m a Philly girl – born and raised.  But y’all know that already.  What you didn’t know is that Goldenberg’s Peanut Chews are from Philly too. At the time, I didn’t know that they were being made in my backyard.

Peanut Chews were developed by the Goldenberg Candy Company, which was founded by Romanian immigrant, David Goldenberg in 1890.  My parents are also Romanian immigrants.  (Oooooh the plot thickens!)  That peanut-molasses chocolate-coated delight is a major throwback to my childhood – a real old school thing!

So for this one I had a little help from my friends.  First I needed a great recipe.  That’s where my neighbor, who just happens to be a professional baker stepped in.  Meet Amy Schneider of Amy’s.  She makes cakes, cookies, cupcakes and more sweet treats exclusive and made-to-order for everyone’s simchas and celebrations in these parts.  Mike and Ikes are her favorite candy, maybe that’s what we get along so well.  Her favorite flavor is blue, mine is red – so maybe that’s really why we get along so well.  I asked her to “make something sweet, something special and something easy with Mike and Ikes”.  She happily obliged.

I figure you may be wondering about my new Joy of Kosher cookbook, like what’s the Mah Nishtanah this time. So I interviewed myself, asking the questions people ask me.   If I missed anything you just gotta know, ask in the comments and I will answer you – a whole lot more fun than talking to myself.

Q: So this is your third cookbook. Did you always want to write cookbooks?

The Ultimate Kosher Gift Basket for Rosh Hashanah ...

There is something so exciting about receiving a kosher gift basket filled with unexpected (and delicious) gourmet goodies.   I am reminded of that magic Mary Poppins purse and wonder how they fit so many yummy foods in one basket and made it look so pretty!  As our thoughts turn to celebrating the Jewish holidays with family and friends and sharing our love with those who live too far away or aren’t able to join us around the table, I am reminded again why a specially made Rosh Hashanah kosher gift basket is the perfect gift to give or get right now.

Many kosher gift baskets come filled with store bought cookies and crackers and a bottle of generic Kiddush grape juice.  Now don’t get me wrong, I still enjoy opening these thoughtful gifts, but they typically get left in my pantry and forgotten or brought to work to share.  I knew there had to be a company out there that made gift baskets that I would want to keep all for myself!  That’s when I discovered Manhattan Fruitier, a 25 year old gift basket company offering kosher gift baskets filled with a combination of fresh fruit and gourmet goodies with a sense of style that will make Martha Stewart jealous.

Kim Kushner has become known for her healthy, hearty and seasonal foods through her private chef business in Manhattan and now her new cookbook, The Modern Menu.  You know how when you learn a new word all of a sudden you hear that word everywhere?  Well, that is what happened with me and Kim.  Kim’s book came out in March and I have been wanting to talk to her and write about her book, but other things kept getting in the way.  Then I saw the book at a friends house one Shabbat, the following week another friend mentioned how much she loved Kim Kushner, I started following her on Instagram and found her on the Today Show, go Kim!

The Modern Menu is all about simplicity.  “To my mind, less is more, simple is always best, and food should look as good as it tastes”, says Kim.  She offers vibrant, every day recipes that should be used as a guide with tips and tricks to make them your own. There are no hard and fast rules with Kim, so mix and match and create your own menus as I did in this Modern Rosh Hashanah Menu From Kim Kushner.

The Best Olive Oil For Rosh Hashanah *Giveaway*

You all know how much Jamie loves to share Simanim inspired recipes and menus this time of year. It’s a fun challenge to integrate as many Simanim (symbolic) foods as we can over the course of the high holidays and start the New Year right.

So I want to take us beyond tradition.  If someone can suggest that celery and raisins on your Rosh Hashanah table will help you get a “raise in salary” then I’m willing to go so far to suggest that adding more olive to your meals will increase the love in your life (if you unscramble the letters you get “I love”).  For that matter, olives and olive oil are good for your heart, too. So why not use the best tasting olive oil you can find, especially now during this auspicious time of year.

“Would you like some gefilte with your condiments?” Hubby always asks me.

Quite like I do with a hot dog – I smother the poor thing with this and that until one wonders if I actually even like it. I do.  But I like it more with horseradish.  And even more with mayo.  And some more with hummus, Turkish salad, marinara and wasabi sauce.  Not all together.  The mayo and horseradish (can) go together, the hummus and Turkish salad work well in tandem, the marinara flies solo, as does the wasabi.

This year Tisha B’av falls out on July 16th, 2013. During the 9 days leading up to the fast it is a custom to refrain from meat. A meatless menu for the 9 days can keep you busy with pizza (we have 100), pasta and potatoes.  And if that’s you’re thing and you’re OK with it then may I recommend my Peach and Arugula Pizza, My Light Fettuccine Alfredo, and my Colorful Mashed Potatoes featuring Gold’s Healthy Horseradish and Wasabi Sauce.  But if you’d like to try something different this year and spice up your meatless recipe repertoire then I have two new dishes just for you.
