I’m basically a make-it-from-scratch cook. But there are a few store-bought, packaged products I couldn’t do without: canned stock, pizza dough and Gold’s Duck Sauce. Two kinds of Gold’s Duck Sauce actually, Sweet & Sour and Hot & Spicy.

“Would you like some gefilte with your condiments?” Hubby always asks me.

Quite like I do with a hot dog – I smother the poor thing with this and that until one wonders if I actually even like it. I do.  But I like it more with horseradish.  And even more with mayo.  And some more with hummus, Turkish salad, marinara and wasabi sauce.  Not all together.  The mayo and horseradish (can) go together, the hummus and Turkish salad work well in tandem, the marinara flies solo, as does the wasabi.

If you’re like me then you probably love Pinterest. I tend to go onto the site three to four times daily looking at different craft projects and adding them to my “I WANT TO DO THAT SOMEDAY” List.

Well one thing that I have always wanted to do was to make my own Mercury Glass Candle Holders. I love mercury glass especially the old distressed look of the design.

Flavorful Recipes Using BBQ Sauce

In life there are two kinds of people.  Ketchup people and mustard people.  I am a mustard people.  I’ve never been a fan of ketchup, but I actually love BBQ sauce. Okay, I guess that means there are three kinds of people.  The rich, smoky flavor of BBQ sauce is very satisfying and depending on the sweetness or spice can offer a range of flavors that ketchup can’t seem to match. I never really used BBQ sauce on anything but meat or chicken until recently, and I can kick myself for not trying it sooner.

I have a few “famous” recipes.  In no particular order, my Challah, Honey Chicken, Chulent, and Chicken Pastrami Rolls are all up there.  These recipes have received a nice number of comments and video views but more importantly they generate lots of in person discussion.  Meaning when I catch up with people on the street, or at a business meeting, or at a friend’s shabbos table – these are the recipes I hear about over and over and over again.

This year Tisha B’av falls out on July 16th, 2013. During the 9 days leading up to the fast it is a custom to refrain from meat. A meatless menu for the 9 days can keep you busy with pizza (we have 100), pasta and potatoes.  And if that’s you’re thing and you’re OK with it then may I recommend my Peach and Arugula Pizza, My Light Fettuccine Alfredo, and my Colorful Mashed Potatoes featuring Gold’s Healthy Horseradish and Wasabi Sauce.  But if you’d like to try something different this year and spice up your meatless recipe repertoire then I have two new dishes just for you.

I went to ETC Steakhouse in Teaneck NJ for my birthday a few years back after we featured Chef Seth, his restaurant and recipes in the pages of our magazine.  Among other things I ordered a Warm Tarragon Potato Salad and could not get it out of my mind.  Crispy taters tossed in creamy dressing have been dancing around in my head, my thoughts, my dreams for what seems like years.  I took one look at the Gold’s creamy Horseradish Sauce and instantly thought about recreating my Quick & Kosher version of this perfect summer BBQ recipe for you all.  This dish is all kinds of crazy good… Watch this easy how-to-video and learn how to make my new obsession in less than 3 minutes.

When it comes to classic barbecue sauce, my go-to brand is Gold’s “Really, Really Good” Barbecue Sauce! It has the perfect balance of sweetness and tang with a mixture of tomato puree, molasses, honey, vinegar, onion powder, garlic powder and natural smoke flavor. And to top it all off, the barbecue sauce is gluten free and fat free. My pantry is practically lined with Gold’s Barbecue Sauce so I can use it at a moments notice. But even with the incredible richness and color of Gold’s bottled sauce, I sometimes like to jazz it up with my own herbs and spices. So with that in mind, I’ve come up with a few recipes that will definitely take Gold’s Barbecue Sauce to a whole new level!

Wasabi Flavored Recipes

It’s hard to believe that ten years ago most of us had never even heard of wasabi.  Maybe we even piled it on our sushi before we knew what it was (guilty as charged). Now the hot green stuff, typically sold in powder or paste is a sushi staple.  Wasabi has come a long way from a sushi condiment, and it’s unique flavor can now be found in many foods, like soy nuts, potato chips and rice cakes.

Wasabi is Japanese horseradish.   It is actually very difficult to get fresh wasabi here in the United States.  Gold’s, already well known for their prepared horseradish, has brought the convenience and flavor of wasabi in a sauce that we can use to top our sushi and flavor tons of other dishes.  It does have some mayo mixed in, but a little goes a long way and you get the added benefit of including more horseradish in your diet, which if you have been paying attention is extremely healthy (click here for my article on the health benefits of horseradish).

When I write about Gold’s I get uber nostalgic.  Gold’s Duck Sauce was perhaps my first kitchen lifesaver.  My first proof (to no one other than myself) that YES, I got this!  My first triumph with Hubby back seat cooking right by my side.

About a week into my marriage, as a recovering vegetarian, I found myself staring at this raw chicken, wondering if there is a way to cook it without touching it. Hubby came to my rescue sharing his all-time favorite chicken recipe.  I called it bachelor food until I realized this “recipe” graced many a Shabbos table all over the world.
