When it comes to classic barbecue sauce, my go-to brand is Gold’s “Really, Really Good” Barbecue Sauce! It has the perfect balance of sweetness and tang with a mixture of tomato puree, molasses, honey, vinegar, onion powder, garlic powder and natural smoke flavor. And to top it all off, the barbecue sauce is gluten free and fat free. My pantry is practically lined with Gold’s Barbecue Sauce so I can use it at a moments notice. But even with the incredible richness and color of Gold’s bottled sauce, I sometimes like to jazz it up with my own herbs and spices. So with that in mind, I’ve come up with a few recipes that will definitely take Gold’s Barbecue Sauce to a whole new level!

Wasabi Flavored Recipes

It’s hard to believe that ten years ago most of us had never even heard of wasabi.  Maybe we even piled it on our sushi before we knew what it was (guilty as charged). Now the hot green stuff, typically sold in powder or paste is a sushi staple.  Wasabi has come a long way from a sushi condiment, and it’s unique flavor can now be found in many foods, like soy nuts, potato chips and rice cakes.

Wasabi is Japanese horseradish.   It is actually very difficult to get fresh wasabi here in the United States.  Gold’s, already well known for their prepared horseradish, has brought the convenience and flavor of wasabi in a sauce that we can use to top our sushi and flavor tons of other dishes.  It does have some mayo mixed in, but a little goes a long way and you get the added benefit of including more horseradish in your diet, which if you have been paying attention is extremely healthy (click here for my article on the health benefits of horseradish).

When I write about Gold’s I get uber nostalgic.  Gold’s Duck Sauce was perhaps my first kitchen lifesaver.  My first proof (to no one other than myself) that YES, I got this!  My first triumph with Hubby back seat cooking right by my side.

About a week into my marriage, as a recovering vegetarian, I found myself staring at this raw chicken, wondering if there is a way to cook it without touching it. Hubby came to my rescue sharing his all-time favorite chicken recipe.  I called it bachelor food until I realized this “recipe” graced many a Shabbos table all over the world.

Health Benefits of Horseradish

Horseradish is a spicy root vegetable with a surprising story.   While it is a common condiment for gefilte fish, you might be surprised to discover that it does more than just clear our sinuses.  Horseradish has been used for decades to treat a variety of ailments including flu symptoms, respiratory problems and urinary tract infections.  However, it has recently been discovered that horseradish can help the body get rid of cancer causing chemicals.

The horseradish plant is a member of the Brassicacae family, a group of plants including cabbage and broccoli.  All of the aforementioned edible plants are low in calories, high in fiber and high in glucosinolates, an anti-cancer ingredient.  While broccoli is well known for its cancer prevention properties, horseradish has ten times more glucosinolates.  Studies show that horseradish is one of the few medicinal vegetables where processing may actually improve the cancer fighting benefits.  So now you have another great reason to reach for the Gold’s horseradish in your refrigerator .

Hot Recipes With Wasabi Sauce

Wasabi is a Japanese horseradish typically available as a dry powder we reconstitute to use as a topping for sushi.  It’s strong pungent flavor pairs perfectly in many recipes from vegetables to chicken to fish.  Gold’s, long famous for horseradish, uses their sharp vegetable to make flavorful sauce with just the right bite.  We have prepared a tasty Pan Seared Salmon basted with Gold’s wasabi sauce that everyone will love as well as Hot & Spicy Wings covered in this liquid green gold.

I always look for a way to change the standard Shabbat menu without taking away from the classic elements of a fish, soup, and chicken.  I find that gefilte fish isn’t always a crowd pleaser, yet a fresh piece of salmon tends to have adults and children asking for more.   After continuously eating dairy, dairy, and more dairy during Shavuot, it’s nice to give  yourself a break with a low calorie, yet flavorful appetizer.  Finding a way to get your family to eat healthy can be difficult, but searing the salmon allows the fish to become crisp on the outside, and juicy on the inside.

About 6 years ago, the summer before the release of my first book, I drove to the Gold’s factory and warehouse out on Long Island for the first of many visits.  I was going to meet Steven Gold, a kind man fiercely dedicated to his craft, to discuss a series of cooking videos I was commissioned to do for the OU featuring his products.

About 9 years ago I was the Bride Who Knew Nothing, a newlywed without a clue in the kitchen. Yeah, yeah I know you read that book and know that story but keep reading, this is a new one. Even way back then, when it came to entertaining there was one rule that I lived by and still live by to this day: the 3 Ps.

Making Horseradish – A Visit to Gold’s...

The food world is finally catching on to what Steve Gold has been saying for years. Horseradish is a superfood. In addition to its incredible earthy and sweet flavor, horseradish is full of health benefits ranging from cancer prevention (horseradish has ten times more cancer-fighting compounds than broccoli!), to respiratory and headache relief. Horseradish has been used for medicinal purposes for years, yet the research on horseradish has become more established and well-known in recent years, while the Gold family has been touting the benefits of horseradish since 1932. Horseradish is creeping up in produce sections throughout the USA, as the demand for horseradish is increasing and will continue to increase in the coming years.
