I don’t like being put into a box, given a label or pegged as this or that.  Do you?  In food and life I appreciate the freedom to be creative and try new things and not let a single style define me.  Aside from words like fast, effortless and easy – which is how I characterize my cooking – I don’t fit into a movement or a mold in anyway, at least in my eyes.  When it comes to Rosh Hashanah though, I am more than happy to state my signature style – it has always been “simanim inspired”.  For a detailed explanation of simanim click here.  For my inspired recipes just scroll down.

Apples and Honey are perhaps the most symbolic foods of Rosh Hashanah – the Jewish New Year.  A traditional Rosh Hashanah Seder (yup I said seder) is a “program” run through at the start of a Rosh Hashanah meal, where we partake of a series of symbolic foods (the simanim) each followed by a specific blessing.

Simanim – literally means signs or indicators – that are meant to point the way to improved circumstances.

“Would you like some gefilte with your condiments?” Hubby always asks me.

Quite like I do with a hot dog – I smother the poor thing with this and that until one wonders if I actually even like it. I do.  But I like it more with horseradish.  And even more with mayo.  And some more with hummus, Turkish salad, marinara and wasabi sauce.  Not all together.  The mayo and horseradish (can) go together, the hummus and Turkish salad work well in tandem, the marinara flies solo, as does the wasabi.

I have issues with dessert.  I love it too much.  Hubby, not so much.  So when we go out to dinner I order two – when I’m done with mine we swap plates and then I work on “his”.  Here and there he takes a spoonful and when it’s really good he takes more and then I get all bent out of shape  – cause if I knew he was going to eat so much I would have ordered a third, which I do on my birthday.  I am also a bad influence on Tamar — when we go out for dinner on my NYC trips I pressure our resident dietitian into ordering dessert, uhm, ok desserts.

These cool summer sweets incorporate a few of my favorite things into refreshing desserts – some of which Tamar may even approve of.

I have a few “famous” recipes.  In no particular order, my Challah, Honey Chicken, Chulent, and Chicken Pastrami Rolls are all up there.  These recipes have received a nice number of comments and video views but more importantly they generate lots of in person discussion.  Meaning when I catch up with people on the street, or at a business meeting, or at a friend’s shabbos table – these are the recipes I hear about over and over and over again.

This year Tisha B’av falls out on July 16th, 2013. During the 9 days leading up to the fast it is a custom to refrain from meat. When I write about Gold’s I get uber nostalgic.  Gold’s Duck Sauce was perhaps my first kitchen lifesaver.  My first proof (to no one other than myself) that YES, I got this!  My first triumph with Hubby back seat cooking right by my side.

About a week into my marriage, as a recovering vegetarian, I found myself staring at this raw chicken, wondering if there is a way to cook it without touching it. Hubby came to my rescue sharing his all-time favorite chicken recipe.  I called it bachelor food until I realized this “recipe” graced many a Shabbos table all over the world.

You know I’m not a from-scratch girl.  More like a semi-homemade woman.  I take lots of shortcuts (in the kitchen and in life) but one thing I loathe is store-bought croutons.  No croutons out of a bag for me!  But you see, I love croutons.  So thankfully this is one of those easily solvable problems (Hashem should only send us easily solvable problems!  This is when you say scream “AMEN!”).

Semi-homemade croutons are a cinch.  Of course they are only semi-homemade if you are using store-bought bread.  If you use your (my) leftover Challah then you can really give yourself a sash and crown yourself domestic diva of the day.  Am looking for my tiara now.  While I search I leave you with two of my favorite salad/crouton recipes:

You all know I was away for Pesach, in Tiberias with Eddie’s Kosher Travel.  Well this Pesach hotel was exactly what I imagine a kosher cruise to be like.  (Since I’ve never been I can’t say for sure, only what I’ve heard.)  We were totally and completely surrounded by great food all day, every day. I haven’t made an appointment with my scale since I returned and really should just excuse myself now and go on a liquid diet. But alas, since that is neither practical nor the healthiest of solutions, I am lightening up my food over the next few weeks so I can actually eat together with my family with these four light recipes for Summer.

Pictured above is a delicious and bright Tropical Slaw.  Beautiful and incredible on its own, this tropical slaw is also superb on fish or chicken.

I rarely boast, but I must say there are some things I do well.  Like really well. I am possibly one of the best procrastinators you will ever have the pleasure of meeting.  I know if it came to a vote, I would be elected Queen of Procrastination in a landslide.  I could teach lessons in it, in fact I should, and I know I am rambling — but it’s all part of the plan… You think I’m rambling, but I’m actually procrastinating.

I have just received from my publisher the 455-page copy edited manuscript of my new Joy of Kosher cookbook, coming out this fall.  My editor Cassie sent it with a note that went something like “YOOHOO” –or was it WOOHOO? – “review this and get back to me – this is so exciting.”

My absolute favorite new recipe – this creamy coleslaw is a versatile beautiful staple at my table. To make it dairy use Temp Tee Whipped Cream Cheese to make it pareve and kosher for Pesach just eliminate the cream cheese and instead add an additional 1/3 cup of mayo. To make it pareve year round use soy cream cheese or sour cream. Use lemon juice or white or apple cider vinegar and use full fat or light mayo. See? I told you! This easiest and prettiest recipe woks with what you’ve got on hand. And people always, always, always! ask me for the recipe. Enjoy and Happy Passover.
