Michel Cluizel is a world renowned luxury chocolate maker.  For Hanukkah, Chocolat Michel Cluizel, on 5th Avenue in New York City, launched its first line of OU certified kosher truffles, pastries and macaroons.  This is the first time the 63 year old French company is producing chocolate in the US.  The chocolate is produced in a brand new state of the art facility built especially for this Kosher Non-Dairy line.

With this first line they are producing 5 flavors of truffles.  My personal favorite is Joy, with almond and hazelnut praline and cocoa nibs coated in dark chocolate.  Now, all of us can experience the Joy of Kosher through chocolate.  I was privileged to receive a sampling of these chocolates and  can’t get enough!  Enjoying these chocolates on a Friday night with a glass of red wine after a nice Shabbat dinner is just pure heaven.

A resolution is a commitment you make to achieve your personal goals, like quitting smoking or losing weight.  People often make resolutions at the start of a new year because it’s a time to reflect on the past and consider change for the future.  Many people join a gym and start exercising for the first time or the fiftieth time.   Are you sticking to your New Year’s resolutions?

An analysis by Italian experts shows that the more individuals are informed by magazines, TV and the internet, the more they stick to the Mediterranean diet, one of the healthiest diets in the world. It has long been thought that the opposite was true, that media was responsible for poor diets and the rise in consumption of fast foods.

This is the conclusion of a study performed by the Research Labs at the Fondazione di Ricerca e Cura “Giovanni Paolo II” in Campobasso. One thousand individuals took part in this study.

Comfort Food – Meatloaf

Winter is comfort food season. There is something about the cold howling wind and long nights that make me crave warm, comforting dishes. On these nights I don’t want an aggressively crunchy salad, or complicated dish with tons of ingredients and steps, I want a dish that warms my heart and soothes my soul.

I have a whole list of sentimental foods that fit the bill. They tend to be something from childhood, easy to digest, soothing and as easy as a pair of fuzzy slippers. They are home-style dishes and not complex “cheffy” recipes.

It was my birthday, and my husband decided to treat me to dinner out at ETC Steakhouse in Teaneck.

Upon our arrival we were greeted with a smile. We didn’t wish to be seated in the place they chose for us – we wanted somewhere a little more private. Our request was granted with the minimum of fuss and delay.

A growing number of supermarkets are hiring companies to evaluate the foods they sell with a ranking system that will help consumers make informed decisions.  King Soopers, a division of Kroger, uses the ratings from one of the larger companies, Nuval, in all of their stores and even have hired dietitians on staff to help their consumers.  You will find the nutrition score right next to the price.

Guiding Stars is another leading company offering a ranking system that provides stars for the food, three stars signifying the best foods.  While Nuval uses a point system, where 100 is the best.  At the same time the governemnet is deciding whether they should implement this type of rating system to be displayed with calories, sat fat, trans fat, sugar and sodium on the front of packages instead of or in addition to on the back.  Currently they are evaluating the research before the next step will be taken.

Eating Light After The Holidays – Healthy...

It was an ironic scene that had played itself out one time to many. I stood in the bakery on a Friday afternoon, observing the pre-Shabbat rush. I looked at the baskets and carts of the women surrounding me, and felt a rush or pride. They were purchasing bakery-made challah, cake, cookies and pastries. I on the other hand, had made it all myself.

Then what, you might ask, was I doing in line at the bakery? No, I was not there as an ego booster, nor was I there to see how much money I was saving by baking everything myself. The answer was clear as I got to the front of the line. “What flavors do you have today in whole wheat, sugar free, low fat muffins?”
