When my oldest son was 9 he started to watch a lot of cooking shows. He then attempted to dabble in the kitchen making everything from inedible cakes to surprisingly delicious chicken or fish dishes. He didn't like to follow a recipe and tended to forget the mantra, "less is more" and always forgot to clean up after himself.

Where he found he could be the most creative was in concocting drinks. He started with flavored seltzers and other mocktails for his brother and sister and quickly graduated to full-blown cocktails for the grown ups. Despite not being able to taste them himself he surprised us all. On Thanksgiving he convinced my brother, our host, to allow him to play bartender.

He made a menu with two signature drinks for the night and he even collected tips for his efforts. What I learned was how important a good signature cocktail is to any meal, especially one that lasts for hours and includes your whole family.

These cocktails are all easy to make and are perfect for the season. Choose your favorites and get ready for a Thanksgiving to enJOY.
