How Do You Like Your Matzo?

There are so many ways to eat matzo.  Plain, covered in cream cheese, butter, jelly, a combination of all three, crumbled up, dipped, and more.  Everyone has their special Pesach favorite.

For me, there is something about cream cheese on one half and salted butter on the other and then another slice with just jelly for dessert.  Well, that is what I did when I was a little kid, so I guess it is comfort food now.   My new tradition is homemade chocolate hazelnut spread on the matzo, my kids are really into this one.

I also like to chop it up and put it in sugary hot coffee for breakfast.  Not sure where my mom learned that one, but she taught it to me and it is a family favorite.  When I asked Jamie to send her favorite way to eat matzo, it turns out she is a crumble in coffee kind of gal, too.  We decided we must be related!

Jamie added that she enjoys her matzo with a thick layer of butter sprinkled generously with kosher salt.  She said, “I LOVE matzah pizza – a thin layer of sauce and a thick layer of shredded mozzarella — cook until well done – golden brown, not gooey.  And of course, chocolate spread —  just not on the same side as the pizza!”

Hadassah says, “My fave – please don’t be grossed out – it’s my special Pesach treat. Matza – two pieces, both spread with butter and then spread with jam.  It must be strawberry.  Then arrange four slices of American cheese on top.  Cover with the other buttered matzah, break into 4, and yum, yum, yum!  I also love chocolate spread and banana.”

We’ll try not to be grossed out!  Everyone gets a little creative during the Passover holiday.

  1. I have a savory favorite and a sweet favorite. My savory favorite is Chive & Onion cream cheese spread over the matzoh and topped with Israeli salad (olive Israeli salad). And the sweet favorite is butter, peanut butter and boysenberry preserves.

  2. My mother always made sure that our matza was crispy by keeping it in the warming drawer of our oven. I think the coastal humidity in Durban took the ‘crispiness’ out of it. For me there was nothing to beat matzah with hand picked avocado pear from our tree , before the monkeys could get to them!!

  3. Matzoh brei…either savory with browned onions or sweet with preserves or fresh fruit.

  4. Cream cheese with cinnamon sugar sprinkled on top, or s’more style with a piece of chocolate and a big marshmallow broiled til the marshmallow is brown and chocolate is squishy!
