Chips and dip are the perfect snack duo for any occasion. Whether you prefer tortilla chips, potato chips, or pretzels, chances are that there is a delicious dip to complement it!

This appetizer may be prepared in advance for easy party planning. The recipes for chips and dip can also be easily expanded or shrunk depending on the number of people attending the party.

Hummus and other types of dipping sauces have been part of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisines for centuries. Though these chip and dip recipes appeared in other parts of the world, they did not appear in the United States until after World War II.

To celebrate National Chip and Dip Day, invite some friends over today for a potluck style chip and dip party. The possibilities are endless for the various combinations of chips and dip you can enjoy, so use your imagination!

  1. Americans eat potato chips at a rate of 1.2 billion pounds per year.
  2. It takes 10,000 pounds of potatoes to make 3,500 pounds of potato chips. In the United States, a pound of potatoes cost 100 times less than a pound of potato chips.
  3. Pringles potato chips are made from potatoes that have been cut, cooked, mashed, and dehydrated.
  4. Dips can be salsa, guacamole, cheesey, chummus, olive dip – anything can be made into a dip.
  5. A whole avocado contains 200-300 calories and is a good source of vitamin A, C, E and the B vitamins, as well as fiber and potassium. Dip without the guilt!

Five Dip Recipes:

  1. Zesty Bean Dip & Chips- With a few tweaks, canned refried beans make a perfect dip for easy snacks or pre-game apps. Stirring salsa into versatile canned refried beans makes a quick and healthy bean dip. It also works well as a sandwich spread with your favorite vegetables and a sprinkle of cheese.
  2. Guacamole and Chips - Jamie Says: If not serving immediately, try this trick for slowing the natural browning process: bury 1 or 2 avocado pits in the guacamole and refrigerate, covered with plastic wrap. My friend Anita told me it psyches out the little avocados–they think they’re still in their skins! Whatever the scientific reason, it works. Another great tip is to omit the lemon from the recipe and instead cover your finished guac with a lemon juice soaked paper towel, tightly making sure there are no air pockets, refrigerate and just before serving, remove the paper towel and give it a good stir.
  3. Low-Fat Blue Cheese Dip - Dipping makes veggies fun—try this tasty dip for dinner, a snack, or a party!
  4. Creamy Spinach Dip- It’s rare that a creamy, rich dip is low-in-fat; but this delicious spinach dip is made with low fat dairy products and is the perfect appetizer to serve to family and friends.
  5. Chile Con Queso - Cheese lovers rejoice, this version of the classic Mexican sauce has 60% less fat than traditional Chile con Queso.
