Asian Themed Mishloach Manot

4 comments | Leave Comment

Purim is around the corner and we’ve been thinking about Mishloah Manot for a while. Since we are always craving sushi what better idea than to share it with our friends, add few orange quarters, an almond cookie, miso soup on the side and the opportunities for brachas add up.

Start with the freshest sushi-quality salmon for the sushi or you can use mock crab like in the picture above, but what about all the essential accoutrement? There are many options. You try to order them on-line, but they come in boxes of 200. We suggest you start in your refrigerator, there are always extra when ordering sushi or Chinese takeout, see if you have a stash or go on and get takeout now to stock up.   If you need more, just walk into your favorite Asian restaurant and see if they’ll sell you a few packets of soy sauce for you Mishloach Manot. If they have the wasabi and pickled ginger, too, even better, but that can be found at most kosher markets.

Then find a kitchen supply store or party store that sells small containers with lids that you can use to package the wasabi and pickled ginger. If the soy sauce packets didn’t workout for you, you can also put them in one of these containers.  These stores should also sell cute little sushi trays with lids that will neatly hold the sushi, wasabi, soy sauce, pickled ginger, orange quarters, and almond cookie.  Get some soup containers to package the miso soup if you want to add on to this Mishloach Manot and you can even find bamboo sushi roller mats for very cheap at most Asian markets. How ever you choose to do it, your busy friends will appreciate some healthy food they can easily eat on the run on Purim day.   Happy Purim!

P.S. Be sure to keep the sushi cold until it will be delivered to its lucky beneficiary.

  1. Great idea, a whole sushi dinner for me to snack on while I drive around delivering Mishloach Manot. I think I am going to make these.

Nice idea … as long as the person likes sushi. I don’t, maybe someone will be more a package of lox or a roll of white fish. Ohhhh some cream sauce herring!!! LOL!

  3. Looks like we forgot to include the recipe for Sushi Rice so here it is

    Sushi Rice
This sweet vinegared rice gives sushi its unique flavor.

    3 and 3/4 cups water
    2 cups uncooked sushi rice
    3 tablespoons rice vinegar
    3 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons
Bring water to a boil. Add rice,
    vinegar, and sugar. Stir thoroughly,
    cover, and reduce heat to
    simmer for 20 minutes. When
rice is fully cooked, turn off heat
    and let cool uncovered.

Makes rice for 7–8 sushi rolls.
