Cranberry Mustard Sauce

OK – so I said I was going traditional this Thanksgiving. Here’s tradition with a hint of mustard. Cranberry Mustard Sauce is often served with the other white meat, a four-letter word that starts with P that shall not be referenced on a kosher site. But it’s also great with chicken and salmon, so I figured hey, how about with turkey?

I did a mix of cranberries and blueberries, and a mix of grainy and Dijon mustards, then added a nice helping of sugar to help the medicine go down. The sweetness of the blueberries, boosted by the sugar, cut the tartness in the cranberries. Voila – a full-flavored sauce with just a slight mustardy tang.

Of course, I will have to serve Hubby the jellied cranberry sauce out of the can – just like his mommy did. (Is it “sauce,” if you clearly see the can lines embedded in it?) But all you foodies out there will appreciate this recipe. I know some people may find it easy when their significant other wants store-bought dinner rolls and jarred cranberry sauce. Me, I find it stifling. My kitchen creativity can’t take such an onslaught. I say, can’t we both just enjoy a little Cranberry Mustard Sauce one day a year? Is it asking too much?

Hopefully, you will try this outrage on your traditionalist.

  1. this sounds delicious! I absolutely love cranberries and am always looking for new ways to serve them.

Cranberry and mustard never would have thought of that. Putting the ingredients on my shopping list

  3. This looks delicious. I never would have thought to mix mustard and cranberry together. We serve the canned cranberry sauce. I love it!

  4. avatar says: strandjss

I serve a homemade variety. It’s a recipe I found years ago called Festive Cranberry Salad but it is so sweet and delicious it tastes more like a dessert than a salad. It is a frozen concoction made with whole berry cranberry sauce, crushed pineapple, miniature marshmallows, pecans, sweetened condensed milk and I cannot remember the other ingredients. It is so delicious

  5. avatar says: dahbou

My mom always served canned cranberry sauce. I think I may change that this year since I have more free time!

  6. avatar says: shayndya

Interesting mix of ingredients! Gotta try it out for Shabbos (can’t serve with a turkey dinner until I know the family likes it).

  7. Mmm, this sounds like a sauce I made a few years ago from a Bon Appetit recipe. Perhaps I’ll try it again this year!

  8. Wowzers that sounds Delish and would go great with our Thanksgiving Turkey this tear…

  9. avatar says: Mamadeb

My mother-in-law always contributes a homemade (with Splenda) cranberry sauce. It’s actually fairly good.

  10. avatar says: Lexiquin

My mother always served canned cranberry sauce–whole berry and jellied, one of each on the table. After I started hosting Thanksgiving myself, I hated having to buy both, because they wouldn’t get eaten. I experimented with making my own cranberry sauce, with mixed results. Then, I found a recipe for a cranberry fruit salad. It uses whole berry cranberry sauce, crushed pineapple, chopped apples & nuts, and cream cheese. It is delicious! That’s what I serve ;)
    Happy Thanksgiving!

  11. avatar says: Lynda

My mom always served from the can or with nuts, so I usually just ate the one from the can since I was never a big fan of the nuts. But this year, I have seen a couple recipes that look good, including this one, so I think Im gonna make one of these.

  12. What an original combination!

  13. We’ve aways used the canned stuff, but this may be worth a shot!

  14. My children will only eat canned because of it’s smooth texture. But, I also make it myself most years. I’m going to try this recipe. Looks great! Thanks :)

  15. avatar says: FAL

I tend to use both jellied as well as whole cranberry PURCHASED sauce. Many years ago i had a wonderful recipe that everyone loved, but in all the moves have made that as well as many other of my favorite recipes seem to have disappeared. One thing i did learn from the first time making my own cranberry sauce is that it can be volatile if you don’t realize that the cranberries will start to burst in the pot as they get hot and you have to be prepared for it. Wishing everyone a delicious Thanksgiving.

  16. avatar says: Ari Ross

We never serve the canned stuff – always go fresh. And we add a “twist” by using jello to thicken, and adding fresh or canned fruit. Delicious – and this recipe also sounds great!

  17. avatar says: Ma Motts

i do both.. some like the can and some fresh

  18. avatar says: realaud

I usually use the canned, whole cranberries & doctor it up with mandarin oranges & apples

  19. Ooh, cranberries AND blueberries! This sounds like a keeper, but will have to try it for shabbat before I serve it to the “kids” (22-36 plus the toddlers). I use canned cranberry sauce – but in other dishes, eg swedish meatballs, not with turkey. Turkey requires creativity since it’s so predictable!

  20. When I was a child, I adored canned cranberry sauce, but now, as an adult, I’m addicted to my husband’s cranberry port sauce, made with fresh cranberries simmered slowly with port wine and a touch of sugar. That being said, this cranberry mustard sauce looks absolutely delectable!

  21. avatar says: diego

something new to do with cranberries! Yippee

  22. This sounds fantastic, I already saved it and will be trying it out on Thanksgiving, Thanks for the recipe!!!!!!!!!

  23. Every year I buy a bag of cranberries with plans to do something and my mom always has a can too. And most years we forget the cranberries until the end of the meal. I love cranberries and this recipe looks yummy. May actually try it this year

  24. avatar says: SBGaron

I usually used canned (my sons insist), but this sounds so good I might try it!

  25. avatar says: Crzemom

sounds like an awesome combo. I love the tang of mustard so i must try this

  26. avatar says: kiyt13

I’ve actually served both (canned and homemade) cranberry sauce. I liked them both, but with all the cooking during the holidays it’s so much easier to go “canned”.

  27. always make my own cranberry sauce. have never tried cranberries with blueberries before. Sounds like my family would enjoy this. Thanx!

  28. avatar says: Jill Lear

Definitely have to make my own sauce. Had canned one year at the in-laws and it made me sad. The idea of blueberries sounds delicious. Might have to check that out.

  29. avatar says: Surnamer

I usually make the simple cranberry sauce recipe as shown on the back of the bag of cranberries. I like the idea of in your recipe of adding some blueberries to it.

  30. avatar says: cdziuba

    Totally canned!

  31. avatar says: ChannahB

Wow, that sounds delicious. I usually make a quick cranberry orange sauce, but I may try this one this year.

  32. avatar says: Erin Cox

That looks so tasty! Growing up, it was always canned. And I didn’t know any better. But when I grew up and started experimenting in the kitchen on my own, I started making my own cranberry sauce. Plenty of ways to do it up, too! I’ll have to try this recipe before the big day ;) Thanks for the chance to win!

  33. avatar says: mink

I don’t mind the canned stuff, at least not enough to bother making fresh (which I do prefer if someone else makes it).

  34. always used canned, nut this sounds superb!

  35. I just bought cranberries for no reason and now I have something yummy to do with them! Thanks.

  36. Sounds delish and plan to make it but to kick it up a notch with some mustard and horseradish, almost like on Pesach! I use that Werber’s Mustard horseradish Sauce, Kosher and Pareve. The best! Thank you!

  37. avatar says: sillelin

Really sounds good, but my hubby & son prefer the canned jelly stuff.

  38. avatar says: elineli07

In general I am not a fan of anything SUPER sweet for a savory meal, but I love the combination of the cranberries with mustard here… Hope to try it soon

  39. I prefer homemade in general, but when I make cranberry onion chicken, I am ALL ABOUT the can!

  40. avatar says: chavlene

I actually combine the two so I “fake it” :-) Does that count

  41. Love the blueberry idea! Very colorful so I approve. I’m partial to the homemade sauce but I admit I admit I enjoy the jellied canned kind once in a while :)

  42. I’ve only served the canned stuff, and more fot others than for myseklf. Perhaps I would eat it if I made it myself!

  43. avatar says: zippy573

    that cranberry mustard looks yummy!
heck i open a can thats been chilled. love the jellied!

  44. sounds delish and easy to make.

  45. avatar says: tmim222

I usually serve the canned cranberry sauce. This sounds awesome so I think I will make it this year. Thanks!

  46. avatar says: fluggy

I make it fresh and this recipe sounds so delicious! I love trying new things at holiday meals!

  47. I’ve usually used the canned stuff but I think this year I will try the recipe and instead of sugar use Splenda to cut down the calories and carbs! It sounds delicious and I think it would be great with salmon, too!

  48. avatar says: mefink

Hubby only eats canned and kids don’t eat it at all. But the recipe sounds very interesting.

  49. avatar says: leta18

Sounds delish!!! I make an awesome cranberry sauce with canned jellied cranberry sauce, crushed pineapple, raspberry jello and nuts (if desired)….This recipe sounds really unique with the various flavors.. YUM!!!

  50. My mother-in-law makes a cranberry relish sauce with frozen strawberries, canned cranberry sauce, mandarin oranges and walnuts-delicious. She makes this sauce to accompany any turkey meal I make (Yom Tov too)

  51. I usually serve canned but have really been wanting to make my own!

  52. avatar says: peg42

We usually use the can type. My sister in laws Dad use to make the greatest cranberry sauce, but unfortunately, none of us learned the recipe.

  53. avatar says: Miraha

I grew up with the canned sauce, and never knew that anything else existed. When I made Thanksgiving for the first time as a married woman, I found a recipe for homemade cranberry sauce, and now I could never even think of using the canned stuff!

  54. I’ve made cranberry relish in the past (Sunset Mag. recipe) and I’ve used canned. (gotta be whole berry, if canned!) Since I don’t host t-giving dinner (I host both night R. Hashana & both seders) I live with whatever I’m served!

  55. avatar says: Nancelah

I made homemade cranberry sauce for the first time last year. This recipe sounds delicious and I know it’ll be a great accompaniment to my free EMPIRE Thanksgiving turkey!!!

  56. avatar says: emelvin

Sounds fabulous. I usually serve both canned and homemade-gotta take care of everyone-and this one is going on the table this year

  57. avatar says: rozebush

Fight over the wishbone? No way! We fight over the slice of canned cranberry sauce that has the pretty rings on the top! Maybe this will be the year I make a homemade cranberry dish so delish that we can retire the can once and for all.

  58. avatar says: rosenugga

While I love cranberry sauce I don’t know about putting mustard in it.

  59. have always used canned but after being in wisconsin you inspire me to try this recipe.

  60. we use the canned kind but i would really like to try making my own.

  61. avatar says: Cee Love

I’ve never used anything but canned which I happened to like after having a really bad experience with fresh I’ve stuck with canned. The bad experience wasn’t my own it was how someone else’s tasted and it threw me off guard. I am willing to try making it fresh and this is a really nice recipe if I decide to make this year. I like the idea of a hint of mustard means it will have a little kick.

  62. avatar says: carolpie

I have made my own with ground up berries, oranges and sugar, but you know how kids are! they prefer canned so that is what I do!
    spcale at yahoo dot com.

  63. avatar says: barbarawr

My husband’s family tradition is cranberry orange relish, and I hate the canned stuff, so I’m more than happy to make the relish, especially since I can make half of it with Splenda so my diabetic father can eat it, too.

  64. avatar says: Amy_M

We make our cranberry sauce homemade. I think this recipe looks great!

    amybabya79 at yahoo.com

  65. avatar says: js22

Since I’m not fond of cranberries, I’d serve canned! When I go to join my friends for Thanksgiving, she makes her own cranberry sauce!
    Thanks for the giveaway!

  66. avatar says: imergoot

I always make my own cranberry sauce with fresh cranberries and oranges from the tree in my yard. I have used a similar sauce to your recipe on a lamb roast. Canned whole cranberry sauce with course mustard and poured over the meat and basted during roasting. I have already ordered my turkey but if I would win I would see if the local kosher food pantry will take it.

  67. avatar says: jlafount

We don’t use it. Was never a family thing to use cranberries

  68. That looks so delicious. I am definitely trying this. Maybe my hubby will give up his canned cranberry sauce!

  69. sounds great. i only serve cranberry dishes when i have company, my family doesn’t like it.

  70. avatar says: jkershen

I serve both the canned cranberry sauce and make it fresh.

  71. avatar says: KAWAII

I admit it, I used canned which is why I don’t usually eat it myself but maybe this recipe might get me to change!

  72. avatar says: susie123

Having bad backs, my husband and I buy store-bought cranberry sauce, but it’s really delicious.

  73. I’m a canned girl myself…but only because my grandfather prefers that!

  74. avatar says: Kim688

Ooo looks good enough to be dessert!

  75. avatar says: Aisling

I have made fresh cranberry sauce a couple of times, but my family insists they prefer the canned. Sigh!

  76. avatar says: Kandi

This will be my first time making my own cranberry sauce. I am told that fresh made is better than that stuff in the can so guess what I will be doing tomorrow? Making this recipe to see how it taste and see if my family will enjoy fresh made cranberry sauce over can.

  77. avatar says: Schmidty

It’s always been canned for us but I am thinking about getting adventurous and making my own. :)

  78. i never really liked cranberry sauce…most likely cuz i’ve only had it canned.
but…i’m a converted freshie seeing this recipe.
we have tons of blueberries left over from blueberry picking in the summer (no, they’re not rotting away. we froze them) and tons of cranberries from the time i went crazy when they were on sale.
looks like they’ll be going to good use soon…
    thanks!

  79. avatar says: miriama59

I don’t eat it so I buy Ocean Spray for my husband. However, the baker in me has been eyeing some delicious recipes and contemplating homemade.

  80. avatar says: 4Stephie

I make my own of course!

  81. My family has always used the canned, but I personally would love to try making my own!

  82. Looks delicious! Can’t wait to try this out!

  83. avatar says: Gwenelle

For most of my life I’ve used canned because I didn’t like the fresh cranberry-orange relish I was served at school. Just a couple years ago, though, I tried some fresh cranberry sauce that a neighbor brought over, and I was converted! Your take on this classic looks interesting. At first I was skeptical of the mustard-in-a-sweet-sauce aspect, but then I remembered that I like Chinese honey mustard, so it looks like this is a go!

  84. I serve the canned.

    madamerkf at aol dot com

  85. avatar says: Atreau

I serve both because my Dad only likes the canned version.

  86. We usually serve the canned sauce because well, we just like it. I have actually made the sauce with real cranberries before and it was really good, but not so much better that I wanted to do it every year.

  87. avatar says: AidelK

On the rare occasions when we have cranberries, they are fresh. This recipe inspires me to give cranberry sauce another try.

  88. I make fresh when I have time, use canned when I don’t. I actually like the canned variety, but my favorite ever was the year I made it fresh from wild cranberries. The flavor was incredible!

  89. avatar says: gkran

    I make it fresh :)

  90. avatar says: luckyme

I am not a huge cranberry fan because I never liked the canned a a child. However, homemade fresh cranberries are the way to go.

  91. fresh crangerries is the only way to go!!!!!!!!!!!

  92. I serve canned cranberry sauce. garrettsambo@aol.com

  93. avatar says: pdale1000

I use canned but we like the whole berry rather than jelly.

  94. I make homemade cranberry sauce whenever possible, but our local stores haven’t got them in-( we live in a rural community): I may have to buy canned this time.

  95. I’ve always used the canned cranberry sauce. I’d like to try homemade, but my husband likes the jellied kind, and I don’t see myself trying to make that.

  96. avatar says: CAROL C

I usually buy canned but this sounds delicious, sweet and tangy. Definitely going to try this.

  97. avatar says: sherdini

i use cans much easier!! when u work there is no time to cook!!!

  98. avatar says: bethminda

I use whole berry cranberry sauce in the can and make a delicious cranberry relish with walnuts..

  99. avatar says: macmomof3

If I am serving only family I may do canned since it’s easier. Occasinally we will serve cranberry sauce from scratch.

  100. avatar says: ladyt64

Everyone except me likes canned so that is what I serve.

  101. avatar says: ksh123

I serve canned. I don’t like it, personally, so I’ve never gone to the trouble of making homemade.

  102. avatar says: lisalmg

We make fresh cranberry sauce each year.

  103. avatar says: donnak4

    We make it fresh.

I always make home made cranberry sauce at Thanksgiving but
serve canned along side it for those who prefer it.

  107. I don’t serve cranberry sauce, since no one likes it except me. I do have a cranberry/horseradish relish I like to use with leftovers on a sandwich, and it’s home made.

  108. I love serving both a homemade cranberry sauce and the good old can. I am always looking for something more interesting. Thanks!

  109. this sounds really interesting!

  110. avatar says: Linda

I prefer to make fresh cranberry sauce, it’s so much better!

  111. I’ve never been a fan of Cranberry Sauce, but the picture sure looks great! Maybe i’ll reconsider…

  112. avatar says: gracieg99

I love cranberry Sauce ad this recipe sounds delicious. I’ll keep it in mind.

  113. This really sounds delicious…I will definitely try it.

  114. My friend Barbara’s recipe. Bring to a simmer 2 bags of frozen cranberries & 1/4 water. Add 1/2 cup or more of sugar if the cranberries are too tart. When cranberries begin to pop add a can of cherry pie-filling. Sprinkle cloves and cinnamon. Stir and cool. Yummy!

  115. avatar says: batya7

Some mandarin oranges or slices of clementine would really make the color pop!

  116. avatar says: edahgal

I always make cranberry sauce from scratch–never the same one twice! I am on an eternal search for the perfect recipe, whether cranberry salsa, relish, chutney or sauce. It’s fun!
